The exhortation for parents to train and “reprove” their children has a long history in the biblical and Graeco-Roman world. The term παιδεία (paideia) (“training”) has rich cultural associations in the Greek world for the training and education of youths in a wide range of subjects and disciplines. For example, Dio Chrysostom remarks that parents teach their children “to play the lyre and to wrestle, to read and write” (Or. 13.17) as the heart of their paideia.
