I. The Holy Spirit’s Ongoing New Covenant Work
>The New Covenant Work of the Holy Spirit: to exalt Jesus Christ by (a) making Him glorious in our eyes, (b) making His saving work effective in our lives, and (c) making His presence in and among us an experienced and operative reality.
II. Dimensions of the Spirit’s New Covenant Work
A. The Holy Spirit Enlightens
1. The Spirit & “the Thoughts of God” – 1 Corinthians 2:9-13
1 Cor 2:9-13 sino como está escrito: «Cosas que ojo no vio, ni oído oyó, Ni han entrado al corazón del hombre, Son las cosas que Dios ha preparado para los que lo aman». Pero Dios nos las reveló por medio del Espíritu, porque el Espíritu todo lo escudriña, aun las profundidades de Dios. Porque entre los hombres, ¿quién conoce los pensamientos de un hombre, sino el espíritu del hombre que está en él? Asimismo, nadie conoce los pensamientos de Dios, sino el Espíritu de Dios. 4. Illumination & Spiritual Growth, Stability, & Joy
Ephes 1:15-19 Por esta razón también yo, habiendo oído de la fe en el Señor Jesús que hay entre ustedes, y de su amor por todos los santos, no ceso de dar gracias por ustedes, mencionándolos en mis oraciones, pido que el Dios de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, el Padre de gloria, les dé espíritu de sabiduría y de revelación en un mejor conocimiento de Él. B. The Holy Spirit Imparts Life
1. This work is decisively expressed in the Spirit’s granting of the new birth (regeneration)
John 3:5-6 Jesús respondió: «En verdad te digo que el que no nace de agua y del Espíritu no puede entrar en el reino de Dios. Lo que es nacido de la carne, carne es, y lo que es nacido del Espíritu, espíritu es. 6

2. In regeneration, the Spirit applies the work of Christ to us, making it a reality in our lives.
· The two aspects of Christ’s work: objectively accomplished and subjectively (i.e., personally) applied.
Ø To exult in Christ and rehearse & rejoice in & appropriate the new birth and all that follows in its wake is to be a “charismatic” in the most basic sense
C. The Holy Spirit Indwells
1. The Spirit’s indwelling is the new covenant realization of God’s eternal purpose
John 1:14 El Verbo se hizo carne, y habitó entre nosotros, y vimos Su gloria, gloria como del unigénito del Padre, lleno de gracia y de verdad.
Cristo trajo la presencia de Dioa de una manera mejor, pero la venida del Espiritu es todavía mejor.
2. The Spirit’s indwelling marks the church as God’s Temple on earth.
1 Cor 3:16-17 ¿No saben que ustedes son templo de Dios y que el Espíritu de Dios habita en ustedes? Si alguno destruye el templo de Dios, Dios lo destruirá a él, porque el templo de Dios es santo, y eso es lo que ustedes son.Ustedes son de Cristo
Nuestra eclesiologia esta marcada porque Dios habita entre nosotros.
Comonpastores nunca debemos dejar de sorprendernos por esto.
1 Cor 6 nos dice que el Cristiano individual tambien es templo de Dios.
3. The Spirit’s indwelling mediates the personal presence of Christ with us.
· The Spirit brings us into full & organic communion with Christ himself.
John 14:23 Jesús le respondió: «Si alguien me ama, guardará Mi palabra; y Mi Padre lo amará, y vendremos a él, y haremos con él morada.
Por el nuevo paxto, siempre tenemos al Espíritu
“… the Spirit makes known the personal presence in and with the Christian and the church of the risen, reigning Savior, the Jesus of history, who is the Christ of faith.”
“[It] is the special ministry of the Spirit since Pentecost to mediate Christ’s active presence”
· In the Spirit’s mediating of Christ’s presence, what it is in view is not simply “spatial proximity,” but personal intimacy. (John 14:18-23; Romans 8:14-25; Galatians 4:4-7)
Ø Eph 3:16-17: “that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith …”
D. The Holy Spirit Transforms
1. The Spirit’s transforming work begins at regeneration.
2. After regeneration, the Spirit begins his work of progressively conforming us to the image of Christ.
The Spirit empowers sanctification by the endowment of a new heart (Ezek 36), giving us new loves, new desires, new appetites, and new aspirations.

The Spirit’s sanctifying work involves our own efforts – Phil 2:12-13
- The “synergistic” (?) nature of sanctification
- While sanctification does require our vigorous efforts, the relations between our efforts & God’s efforts are not symmetrical
- Our work is absolut****ely required—but both the desire for the work and the work itself are enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Phil 2:12-13 Así que, amados míos, tal como siempre han obedecido, no solo en mi presencia, sino ahora mucho más en mi ausencia, ocúpense en su salvación con temor y temblor. Porque Dios es quien obra en ustedes tanto el querer como el hacer, para Su buena intención. 13
Nosotros obramos pirque el obra, nuestra obra y esfuerzo es consecuencia de la obra de Dios.
En la santificacion nosotros actuamos el milagro.

3. New Testament images involving the Holy Spirit’s work in sanctification
El fruto del Espíritu
a. “Walking by the Spirit”
Gal 5:16 Digo, pues: anden por el Espíritu, y no cumplirán el deseo de la carne.
Gal 5:16 contains a command and a promise, with the emphasis on the latter.
· “Let your life be controlled by the Spirit”: a lifestyle of active dependence upon God every day.
en énfasis en este versículo no esta en la lucha, sino en la obra del Espiritu.
b. “Filled with/by the Spirit” – Acts 4:8, 31; 6:3, 5; 11:24; 13:9; Ephesians 5:18
(1) Being “filled with the Spirit” often indicates an ongoing quality of life and character in which one is actively dependent upon God and consistently under the influence of the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:3, 5; 11:24; Eph 5:18).
En el centro de la pneumatologia esta la dependencia
Ephesians 5:18: the one text that commands us to be “filled with the Holy Spirit”
Ø “To allow oneself to be under the control of the Holy Spirit”
Ø “To allow oneself to be changed more and more into the image of God and Christ”—i.e., we’re not filled “with” the Spirit as content, but “by” the Spirit as the agent, who fills us with “the fullness of God” (1:23) or Christ (4:13).
These interpretations complement each other: to be “filled to the full” by the Spirit will indeed result in Christ’ own character being more manifest in our lives.
A suggested application: Psalm 25:1: “To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.”
When I pray this, I am seeking to make Christ the chief object of my affections, making His glory the chief goal of my actions, and making His all-sufficiency the chief object of my dependence and well-spring of my hope.
E. The Holy Spirit Empowers
1. Power for Life and Ministry: “Filling” (Acts 4:8; 30; 13:9; cf. Acts 6:5, 8 with 6:10)
Being “filled with the Spirit” can also indicate an instantaneous intensification of the Spirit’s presence that provides (a) empowerment for an act of ministry or (b) strength for obedience and godly resolve (Acts 4:8, 31; 13:9; poss. Eph 5:18).
Positioning ourselves to receive an “instantaneous” filling should not be an “instantaneous” event. ==We position ourselves for such sovereign empowerments by seeking to be constantly “filled with the Spirit”—through, e.g.: a consistent drawing near to the Lord, seeking his presence and delighting in him; daily dependence upon the Lord, seeking his grace, guidance, & glory; a consistent intake and internalization of his Word, studying it, embracing it, and meditating upon it; and accessing all the means of grace available to us individually and in the church.==

The Filling of the Spirit
When Christ ascended, he poured out the Holy Spirit on the church, ushering in a greater experience of God’s presence and power among his people. The Spirit transforms hearts by the miracle of regeneration and indwells all believers in abundant, new covenant measure. The Spirit also desires to fill God’s people continually with increased power for Christian life and witness. To be filled with the Spirit is to be more fully under his influence, more aware of his presence, and more effective in his service. All Christians, therefore, must continually seek to be filled with the Spirit by living and praying in such a way that invites the Spirit’s work among us, actively longing for God to accomplish his gracious purposes in us and through us. The filling of the Spirit brings to God’s people a deeper knowledge of Christ, an increased desire for holiness, a stronger commitment to unity and love, a greater fruitfulness in ministry, and a deeper gratitude for our salvation.
The Pervasive Presence of the Spirit’s “Power”
